Learn to Skate: The First Step Toward Hockey
Our Learn to Skate program is the perfect introduction for children ages 3â8 who are curious about hockey. No prior skating experience is neededâjust a willingness to try something new and have fun!
This program focuses on building strong foundational skating skills, including balance, stride, edges, and stopping, all in a positive, encouraging environment. We aim to help young skaters gain confidence on the ice while having a great time.
Early in the Season
Skaters start at their own pace. Our experienced coaches work with each child to develop proper technique, and our goal is to have everyone skating on their ownâno assistance neededâby the New Year.
Later in the Season
As the season progresses, and at the Directorâs discretion, players may begin using hockey sticks during practices. This is when basic hockey skills are introduced alongside continued skating developmentâlaying the groundwork for future hockey success.
By combining skating fundamentals with early exposure to hockey, our Learn to Skate program is the first exciting step in a childâs journey to becoming a hockey playerâone confident stride at a time.

Expert Coaching
Weâre thrilled to have one of the most highly respected skating instructors in New England, Pete Joyal, leading the program this season! With both a Bachelorâs and Masterâs in Education, Pete combines his teaching background with decades of hockey experience as a player, coach, and director. From his youth days with Triboro and the Minuteman Flames to captaining Algonquin High and playing at Westfield State, Pete has lived the game. His coaching rĂ©sumĂ© includes the Minuteman Flames, Boston Junior Eagles, Boston Junior Terriers, and U18 NorthStar Selects, as well as serving as Hockey Director at Warrior Ice Arena, the official training facility of the Boston Bruins.
Parent Involvement
Parents are encouraged to join their child on the ice! If youâd like to participate, please be sure to wear skates and a hockey helmet.  Parents must register to be on the ice and complete the necessary documentation, including a CORI check! Please send an email to hydeparkyouthhockey@gmail.com if you are interesting!
Whether you're new to hockey or a lifelong fan, your involvement makes a difference. You and your player are the future of Hyde Park Youth Hockey. Help us keep our tradition of fun, friendship, and competitive hockey going strong for generations to come!
