New to Hockey? Start Here

If your family is new to hockey, welcome!

You do not need skating or hockey experience to get started. Our beginner programs are designed to help kids build confidence, learn skills, and fall in love with the game in a fun and supportive environment.

Most new players begin in one of these programs:

  • β›Έ Learn to Skate – focuses on balance and basic skating skills
  • πŸ’ Learn to Play – introduces hockey fundamentals and gameplay
  • πŸ₯… U6 / Mites – first team-based hockey experience

If you're unsure where your player fits, we’re happy to help guide you.

What’s the Time Commitment?

Time commitments vary by program, but most beginner and development programs skate about once per week.

As players advance, schedules may include:

  • Practices
  • Games
  • Tournaments
  • Team events

Travel programs may include additional games and practices depending on age level.

Your team schedule will always be available through the Crossbar app and website.

Stay connected with your team by downloading the Crossbar Mobile App, where you can view schedules, receive updates, communicate with coaches and team families, and access important program information.

Be sure to turn on notifications so you don’t miss updates.

Required Hockey Equipment

For safety, players must wear full hockey equipment during practices and games.

Required Equipment

  • Hockey helmet with cage or full face shield
  • Neck guard (required for all players)
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Hockey gloves
  • Hockey pants
  • Shin guards
  • Athletic cup / pelvic protector
  • Hockey skates
  • Hockey stick

Many families purchase equipment at local hockey shops or secondhand from other players as kids grow quickly.

Game Day Tips for Parents

A few helpful tips to make game days easier:

  • ⏰ Arrive early – players should arrive about 30 minutes before ice time to get dressed and ready.
  • πŸ’ Label equipment – helmets, gloves, and sticks can look very similar!
  • πŸ’§ Bring water – hydration is important even in cold rinks.
  • πŸ‘ Cheer loud and support all players – youth hockey is about fun, development, and teamwork.

Volunteers Make HPYH Possible πŸ’›

Hyde Park Youth Hockey is a volunteer-run organization, and parent involvement is a huge part of what makes our community special.

Ways parents can help include:

  • Team managers
  • Tournament volunteers
  • Fundraising events
  • Snack bar shifts
  • Program support

Even small contributions of time make a big difference for our players.

Financial Assistance

HPYH believes hockey should be accessible to every child who wants to play.

Financial assistance opportunities may be available through several programs.
