WELCOME TO THE HYDE PARK YOUTH HOCKEY 2010/2011 TRYOUTS
Thank you for taking part in the HPYH tryouts. We have put together a program that is intended to provide all participants an equal opportunity to demonstrate their hockey skills. The drills and scrimmages that are planned will give your child every opportunity to do his/her best, and to give the evaluators a clear picture of the skaters' abilities.

Tryouts can be stressful for both parents and players. A child will usually settle down after being on the ice a short time, but the sessions are limited; so the parents need to control their own stress and help keep their children calm so the kids can put their best skate forward in each session.

The following sections will inform you as to the structure of the tryouts. Please take time to read this information and if you have any questions, see Bill Dunn, Dennis O’Brien, John Crowley, Jay Moccia, Tryout Coordinators, or Lynn McNamee, HPYH Secretary. Please do not, in any case, approach the evaluators or on-ice staffs during the session.

Hyde Park Youth Hockey is committed to all the children in the program. This commitment is not limited to hockey skills: HPYH works to develop both physical and social skills. For many of the players, HPYH is their first introduction to the concepts of teamwork, dedication and at times, peer pressure. Handled correctly, ice hockey will teach these youngsters many positive and valuable lessons that can last a lifetime.

Once again, welcome both players and parents; thanks for being here and thanks for your continued participation in the program.

WHAT IS THE EVALUATION PROCESS?
The evaluation process will have two components: skills and scrimmages. The skills component will consist of a series of varied drills, designed by the Tryout Coordinators and executed by the on-ice staff, that are intended to focus on different fundamental aspects of ice hockey: skating, shooting, passing; defensive play; offensive play; and hockey sense. The drills will allow the evaluators to judge the ability of the players accurately. The scrimmage sessions will be held the second session. There will be 3 on 3 scrimmages and, in some cases, 4 on 4 scrimmages. The on-ice coordinator will organize the scrimmages. Players may be mixed and rotated during these sessions. Scrimmages allow the proper evaluation of players all around hockey ability and hockey sense.

HOW WILL TEAM SELECTIONS BE DETERMINED?
After the final session of each level, the evaluators involved will analyze the scores and select players. There are four evaluators for all levels. The evaluators will, in numerical sequence, call out their selections by rank, which will be written on an erasable board. These ranks are determined through the evaluation of the above-mentioned fundamentals of hockey. When a player's number appears three times, that player is ranked. This process will be followed until every player has been ranked. At that point, when all the players have been ranked, the players will be assigned to teams according to their ranking.

WHAT IS A BUBBLE PLAYER AND HOW WILL THEY BE PLACED?
A skater is considered on the 'bubble' when they can go as the last player to higher team or first player on the next team down at the same age level. This can occur due to team size or very tight scoring. In addition, review of the evaluators scores and past history provided by the current season coaches’ evaluations will make up the secondary criteria for selection.

WHAT IF A PLAYER WANTS TO TRYOUT AT A DIFFERENT AGE LEVEL?
ALL skaters will tryout at their own age level. If there is a Massachusetts Hockey medical waiver requested to play at a younger level, or a legitimate reason to play at an older level, the skater will still ONLY tryout at their own level. The skater’s family requesting the age waiver will need to communicate their level request to a Tryout Committee member or Lynn McNamee, who will note the request on their tryout application. If it is determined that the player will play at the requested level (different from their actual age level), it will ALWAYS be on the lowest level team at that different age designation. This is a USA Hockey rule.

WHEN WILL THE SELECTION RESULTS BE AVAILABLE/WHERE CAN WE SEE THEM?
The goal is to have team selections available Friday March 5th for all travel teams. They will be posted on our website
by Midnight. PLEASE NOTE: Depending on tryout numbers at a specific level, the Tryout Committee reserves the right to withhold team selection until a future date.

WHO WILL HAVE THE PLAYER'S SCORES AND WILL THEY BE MADE PUBLIC?
The Tryout Coordinators will retain all scores and notes. The scores will not be made public.

WHO WILL BE PRESENT DURING TEAM SELECTIONS?
The evaluators for that level, the Tryout Coordinators and one person to record the selections will be allowed in the room while selections are made. Of the people in the room, only the evaluators and the Tryout Coordinators will have any say in selections. Bubble players will be placed using the evaluations and recommendations of current season coaches.

WHAT IF AN EVALUATOR HAS A CHILD AT THE LEVEL HE/SHE IS EVALUATING?
We have not scheduled anyone to evaluate his/her own child. However, schedules could be adjusted due to unexpected circumstances. If that happens and someone ends up evaluating at his/her child's level, that evaluator will have no input regarding his/her own child; the child will be ranked and placed by the other evaluators only, using the regular selection process.

WHAT IF A SESSION IS MISSED FOR ANY REASON? FOR INSTANCE ILLNESS OR INJURY?
You should plan on attending all tryout sessions, beginning with the first night, scheduled for your level. The more the evaluators see of you, the better your chance of accurate placement. However, it is understood that problems can arise, and if you find yourself in that position please contact one of the Tryout Coordinators or Lynn McNamee as soon as possible so we are aware of your absence. The selection will be based on whatever information is available from any sessions that were completed and evaluated, input from coaches, and with discussion among the evaluators and Tryout Coordinators.

There has been much hard work by many folks putting these tryouts together. We will conduct the best and fairest tryouts, evaluations and placements we can. We need you to remember, however, no process is perfect. If you have any thoughts or opinions on the process, we encourage you to share them with the Tryout Coordinators now rather than letting them fester. Also note, our amazing volunteers are what keep HPYH alive and well, but please understand, under no circumstances will the child of a volunteer receive preferential placement because of their parent’s participation.

Once again, thank you for participating in the HPYH tryouts; we look forward to your continued support and participation through the tryouts and through the coming hockey season.
