Drive by Bajko Rink during the Annual Mark Bavis Memorial House Tournament and you'll notice there is hardly an empty parking space. Enter the lobby and you'll see it filled to capacity. Glance quickly at the rink and you might wonder, “where’s the game?” A closer look reveals the presence of tiny teams on the ice, their little helmets barely visible over the boards, going at it like it was the Stanley Cup.
Playing a 3 on 3 cross ice format, the Hyde Park Youth Hockey sponsored Annual Mark Bavis Tournament features House teams from the Greater Boston, Massachusetts area. Players range in age from 5 to 10 years old and they contain boundless energy and enthusiasm, putting it all on display as they race back and forth in an effort to be this year's champion.
The Mark Bavis House Tournament is held each year to remember Mark Bavis, a former Hyde Park Youth Hockey player who was tragically lost on September 11, 2001 in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The Bavis Family generously helped start a Hyde Park Youth Hockey Bavis Fund that is supported by this annual tournament. HPYH and the Bavis' work hand in hand to utilize the fund to grow the House Program (Learn to Skate, Intro to Hockey and House teams) at Bajko Rink. The 2012-2013 season began again with One Goal Hockey Gear sets being distributed at no cost to those signing up for the House Program as well as all the Jerseys proudly displaying the Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation sponsorship on the back.
A special note from Pat Bavis: "Thanks again on keeping Mark's memory alive with the House tournament. I think out of all the things in memory of Mark, this is one of the best. I can remember both Mark and Mike starting out in the small rink [at Bajko] pushing milk cartons, and to see these young kids enjoying themselves is great."
